You can have drumming lessons purely for fun and relaxation without learning to read music. However reading music can be useful in building a portfolio of all the drum lessons to reference at any time. It is also helpful when learning to see the rhythms written down so you know for example, if the bass drum is played with the hi hat or comes slightly before or after it. A visual representation of what you are hearing can add to the experience!
